Meet Our 2024 Mayors Challenge Student Lineup!
Please send the best of luck to our all-star lineup of debaters who will compete in the 2024 Mayors Challenge! These students will examine the affirmative and negative side of AI and Intellectual Property Rights. Our students are researching, writing, and practicing their arguments – and they’re excited to share them with you!
Affirmative Team:
Ani McQuillen & Max Ulven will argue the affirmative (pro) side!
Ani McQuillen competes in both MSHSL & Spanish Debate at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. When she is not debating, she enjoys outdoor sports and playing guitar. She’s excited to be a part of this year’s Mayor’s Challenge!
Max Ulven is a senior at St. Paul Central High School. He’s one of the current MSHSL State Debate Champions and is looking forward to debating this year and in college. After graduation, he plans to study either history or philosophy.
Negative Team:
Laura Afriyie and Sai Yang will argue the negative (con) side!
Laura Afriyie is a senior debater for Tartan High School who also coaches at Skyview Middle School. She’s a captain for the pom squad, plays tennis, participates in AVID, and balances extracurriculars with AP classes. Upon graduation, Laura hopes to attend college to study either law or biology.
Sai Yang is a senior from Johnson High School. He competed in the storytelling speech category during his junior year along with competing in debate. We profiled Sai earlier this year; check out the story at our blog!
