Spanish-Language Debate Season Concludes with Largest Participation Yet
Our Debate En Español season has officially wrapped up following last week’s high school championship. More than 270 students participated overall! We’re particularly excited to have brought Debate En Español to the Urban Debate National Championship for the very first time this year! A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who contributed to making this program a success, from the local in-person tournaments to national virtual divisions.
Speaking and reading only in Spanish, students engaged with this year’s challenging topic centered on Amazon rainforest conservation policies, giving them the opportunity to explore multiple perspectives on this multifaceted environmental issue. We’d like to recognize Sandy Bolton Barrientos and Boston Debate League graduate/NAUDL Fellow David Rivera for their valuable contributions to curriculum development.
Our sincere appreciation extends to the dedicated coaches who shared their expertise as both Spanish speakers and educators, supporting our students’ academic development. Community volunteers with Spanish fluency from diverse backgrounds stepped up to serve as judges, and their mentorship was instrumental in fostering student growth.
We’d also like to thank Jose Vilchis Cortez, Roosevelt High School debater; and Arianna Genis, founder of The Movida Initiative, for serving as the emcees at the championship tournaments and Roosevelt High School and Augsburg University for hosting!
La Temporada de Debate en Español Concluye con la Mayor Participación Hasta Ahora
La temporada de debate en español concluyó oficialmente la semana pasada, después del campeonato de high school. Más de 270 estudiantes participaron. Estamos particularmente entusiasmados por haber traído el Debate en español al campeonato nacional de Debate urbano este año! Agradecemos a todos los que contribuyeron al éxito de este programa, desde los torneos locales hasta los torneos nacionales.
Este año, los estudiantes se enfocaron en debatir sobre la conservación de la selva amazónica. Hablando y leyendo solamente en español, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar varias perspectivas sobre este problema ambiental. Queremos reconocer a Sandy Bolton Barrientos de la liga de debate de Minnesota y a David Rivera de la liga de debate de Boston/miembro de NAUDL, por sus valiosas contribuciones al desarrollo curricular.
Un sincero agradecimiento a los entrenadores por compartir su experiencia como hispanohablantes y educadores, y por dedicar su tiempo a apoyar a nuestros estudiantes en su desarrollo académico. Agradecemos también a nuestros voluntarios de la comunidad que sirvieron como jueces en los torneos de debate. Su conocimiento del español y sus experiencias diversas fue fundamental para impulsar el crecimiento estudiantil, y apreciamos tanto su mentoría.
