Battle Creek Middle School Debate Students Meet Senator Hawj and Senator Hoffman at the State Capitol

Senator Hawj

Battle Creek Middle School students recently visited the Minnesota State Capitol to advocate for public safety with teacher Allison Kildahl.

While there, the students took time to meet with Senator Foung Hawj and Senator John A. Hoffman, authors of a bill to support debate programs. Team members Zaniya and Marley shared their thoughts, personal experiences of participating on the Battle Creek debate team, and thanking the Senators for supporting debate.

Our urban debate league team loves this story (and like any good debater, we have 3 reasons):

1) We love seeing students putting their advocacy skills, including public speaking and argumentation, into action outside the round and in the real world!

2) We are excited for our students to have the opportunity to participate in the public process and have their voices heard

3) We are so glad they had the opportunity to meet Senator Hawj who represents them and  where they go to school.

Our students use their debate skills to enter the halls of power confident and informed. Did you know there is a strong connection between debate and civic engagment? Learn more about it at the National Civic League website.
